Sports Direct acquires Bob's Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports

Sports Direct International subsidiary SDI USA has acquired clothing retailers Bob's Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), expanding its footprint in the US.

As part of the acquisition, SDI USA will have a portfolio of 50 retail stores across the country under the Bob's Stores and Eastern Mountain Stores fascias.

In April, Sports Direct International received the approval of the Delaware Bankruptcy Court to acquire certain assets of Eastern Outfitters, comprising the businesses of Bob's Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports.

The acquisition marks the culmination of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition filed by Eastern Outfitters in February.

"Adding these reputable and established retailers to Sports Direct's portfolio of holdings in the US will afford us a strong platform."

A Sports Direct International representative said: "Adding these reputable and established retailers to Sports Direct's portfolio of holdings in the US will afford us a strong platform with which to rapidly expand our store and web presence, in this critically important market."

In the coming months, SDI USA is planning to expand the product lines in the US stores and websites, including the US debut of European brands.

SDI will initially operate the acquired brick and mortar stores in the Northeastern US, five EMS outdoor adventure schools, and the ems.com and bobstores.com websites.

Earlier this month, Sports Direct International increased its stakes in US clothing companies Iconix Brand Group and Finish Line to 13% and 19% respectively.
