E-commerce retailer Amazon is reportedly planning to launch a new business line, which sells automated checkout technology to third-party retailers.

According to Reuters, the retailer has several signed deals with undisclosed parties.

In addition, a new website will invite others to inquire about the service, which is called Just Walk Out technology by Amazon.

This business is said to be a part of the retailer’s strategy of developing internal capabilities before offering the service to others.

Amazon physical retail and technology vice-president Dilip Kumar was quoted by the news agency as saying: “Do customers like standing in lines? This has pretty broad applicability across store sizes, across industries, because it fundamentally tackles a problem of how do you get convenience in physical locations, especially when people are hard-pressed for time.”

Last month, Amazon launched its first full-size cashier-less supermarket under its Amazon Go chain, which introduced shopping without checkout lines and the market for retail without cashiers.

Unlike Amazon Go stores, the new process will reportedly allow shoppers to insert a credit card into a gated turnstile to enter. The turnstiles will display the ‘Just Walk Out technology by Amazon’ logo.

All other branding and store aspects will be controlled by Amazon using the service.

Items collected by a customer or any guests who enter with them will be added to the virtual cart of the shopper. Once the person or group leaves the store, the store will bill the credit card.

No barcode scans or checkout lines are required for payment.

Reuter also stated that Amazon will install the technology, including ceiling cameras and shelf weight sensors, at retailers’ stores.
