British supermarket chain Asda has launched its first Scottish refill store in Toryglen, Glasgow.

The refill service is part of the retailer’s efforts to reduce and reduce plastic and promote a more sustainable shopping experience.

It was first introduced at Asda’s store in Leeds last October.

The retailer launched the Toryglen store in partnership with major household brands, including Kellogg’s, Napolina, Yorkshire Tea and Unilever.

The store offers more than 60 products, including pasta, rice, tea, coffee and cereals, sold loose and unpackaged across specific aisles.

Customers can either bring their own containers or buy reusable containers at the store.

As part of its ‘Greener at Asda Price’ commitment, the retailer is selling all unpackaged products for the same price as their packaged equivalents or cheaper.

Asda commercial sustainability director Susan Thomas said: “We have chosen Scotland as the location for our second refill store because it is an important market for Asda and a place where we regularly receive constructive feedback from our customers.

“This feedback is very important to us as we refine our refill offering in stores and work towards a goal of making refill and reuse part of every shopping trip.

“With COP26 coming to Glasgow, there has certainly been an increase in interest in environmental issues across the country, so to see refill land in the host city and with such engaged customers is a really important moment for us.”

The Toryglen refill store is in line with Asda’s target to eliminate three billion pieces of single-use plastic from its operations by 2025.

The company plans to roll out its refill service to stores in Milton Keynes and York by the end of the year.

Earlier this month, Asda announced plans to ‘transform’ its Derby and Wigan stores into ‘new retail destinations’ by adding 13 fashion and lifestyle brands.
