UK convenience retailer Co-op has announced plans to launch more than 65 stores new and extended stores.

The announcement is part of a £130m store investment programme, which aims to generate up to 1,000 local jobs.

Under this investment, more than 100 stores will undergo major renovations.

Co-op plans to launch up to 12 new franchise stores this year, including at Oxford Brookes University and Stirling University. It noted that additional university locations are planned for next year.

The partnership between Co-op and John Lewis Click & Collect service will increase beyond 500 Co-op stores this month.

Separately, start-up Pinga joined forces with Co-op to offer zero-emission online grocery deliveries across East London.

Co-op operates over 2,600 food stores and employs 55,000 workers across the UK.

In July, Co-op planned to launch a new body-worn video solution from Motorola Solutions to front-line colleagues to fight in-store crime.
