Australian chain Coles Supermarkets has offered A$0.15 reusable Better Bags in its stores across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, until Sunday.

The move is to help customers with the transition from single-use plastic bags.

The single-use plastic bags are banned in all states except Victoria and New South Wales. The ban will be introduced in Victoria next year.

Coles chief operating officer Greg Davis said: “We want to do everything we can to help our customers. For some, it can be difficult to get into the routine of bringing your own bags to the supermarket or know exactly how many you may need for your entire shop.

“To help our customers during this transition period, we’re pleased to help out by offering our customers complimentary reusable plastic bags in those states where single-use plastic bags have been removed for the first time.”

“We’ve invested in extra customer service during this period and our team members have provided terrific support.”

Coles Community Bags are designed using 80% recycled material by Australian school children and are currently available for purchase from $1.00. They can be recycled through the RedCycle bins available at all Coles supermarkets.

Last month, the supermarket chain pledged to reduce food waste to 50% across its supermarkets by 2020.

It also announced plans to make all packaging of Coles Brand products recyclable by 2020, as well as reduce plastic wrapping on fruit and vegetables.
