US-based e-commerce company eBay is set to launch its 12-month Retail Revival programme in Lansing, Michigan, to help local businesses boost their reach and revenue using its global marketplace.

The programme will provide training to entrepreneurs and small businesses in Lansing who are on the look-out to harness the power of technology.

Initially launched in Akron, Ohio, earlier this year, Retail Revival aims to bring traditional brick and mortar main street businesses online.

eBay Americas senior vice-president Scott Cutler said: “Our Retail Revival pilot programme in Akron, Ohio, has shown the impact online marketplaces and a little bit of training can have in supporting local businesses to grow and thrive in the current retail environment.

“We knew we found an ideal partner in Lansing after seeing first-hand its strong community of small businesses, and we’re looking forward to working with these businesses to bring their products to our 175 million buyers around the world.”

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said that the programme will further support the growth of small businesses throughout the city.

According to a recent study by UBS, retailers with physical stores have taken a hit in recent times, while 7,795 store closures have been recorded across the US last year.

eBay will provide ongoing support and resources to Retail Revival sellers in Lansing to get started and scale their business on the eBay platform helping existing local businesses to grow.

As part of this, the company will provide training programmes, one-on-one coaching, direct access to a dedicated customer service team, and an eBay store subscription.

eBay also plans to expand the Retail Revival programme through partnerships with additional cities both in the US and across the globe.
