US-based grocery chain Food Lion has completed the remodelling of 63 stores across greater Roanoke in Virginia, with an investment of $91.7m.

The retailer used the investment to renovate the stores, lower prices and expand product offerings. The investment has also created 2,000 jobs in the region.

This investment marks the remodelling of 712 stores in the last four years.

“We’ve created a new grocery shopping experience through the significant investments in our stores, customers, associates and communities.”

Food Lion president Meg Ham said: “Roanoke is very special to Food Lion. We’ve been part of the fabric of this community for 40 years opening our first store in Martinsville, Virginia. A lot has changed since we opened our first store in this market.

“We’ve created a new grocery shopping experience through the significant investments in our stores, customers, associates and communities.

“From our expanded variety and product assortment, newly reorganised stores, new signage to a more efficient check-out experience, every change we’ve made will make it easier for our customers to find fresh, quality products at affordable prices every day.”

The company is also opening all the remodelled stores today through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

As part of the remodelling, 13 of the 63 stores feature walk-in garden coolers to keep the products fresh for longer periods, while 12 stores feature a wing bar assortment offering quick meal solutions to customers.

The grocery store chain also expanded its product offerings across each store by introducing more choices of craft beer, limited reserve wines, and organic and gluten-free items.

In addition, select stores will feature hand-battered chicken and in-store cut fruit and vegetables.
