US-based supermarket chain Publix Pharmacy and prescription delivery service provider ScriptDrop have partnered to provide home delivery of prescriptions.

Under this partnership, the partner will be delivering prescriptions within a five-mile radius of each in-store Publix Pharmacy for a $5 delivery fee.

The retailer placed no restriction on the number of prescriptions ordered for delivery except for age-restricted products, controlled substances and prescriptions needing refrigeration.

The service will not be accessible by individuals with Medicare Part B and Medicaid insurance.

Publix Pharmacy vice-president Dain Rusk said: “As a healthcare provider, Publix Pharmacy has adopted business practices that support the social distancing guidance provided by the CDC.

“We believe this service provides a convenient option for customers who are age 65 and over, have compromised immune systems or require medications but are limiting trips outside their homes.”

Customers whose prescriptions are ready will receive a link to prepay for their prescriptions and opted for delivery.

Orders must be placed before 11am for same-day delivery. Delivery will be done on weekdays after 2pm, the companies said.

Despite launching the service during the Covid-19 pandemic, Publix Pharmacy plans to continue prescription delivery beyond the crisis.

Owned and operated by its more than 200,000 employees, Publix runs 1,242 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

Earlier last month, Publix planned to launch a contactless payment method to all of its stores as part of measures to protect the health of its customers and employees during the pandemic.
