Ahold Delhaize USA’s Retail Business Services has introduced new frictionless store technology developed in collaboration with digital technology and transformation provider UST Global.

Named as Lunchbox, the new technology is designed to allow customers to quickly scan, shop and go in seconds.

Lunchbox is currently being piloted in Retail Business Services’ office in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Retail Business Services EVP, IT and CIO Paul Scorza said: “Once registered, shoppers simply scan in, shop and walk out. It’s that easy. And it offers fresh, healthy options 24/7. You can grab a snack, a salad, fresh fruit or even a carton of milk on your way home.”

“We believed in this concept so much we brought it to our own office.

“Our cafeteria that serves more than 1,000 associates was being remodelled and we were looking for a quick, cost-effective solution to give associates access to beverages, snacks and fresh items at a variety of hours.

“We implemented this solution in just six weeks. Today, thousands of shops, with groups of up to 12 in the store at the same time, have been successfully completed.”

Retail Business Services was responsible for developing the application, technology connectivity and also providing food retail operations expertise.

The store’s artificial intelligence technology solution and physical infrastructure was developed by UST Global and its partners.

Lunchbox’s application technology is powered by a Retail Business Services’ proprietary app. It is said to be efficient when compared to the previous frictionless store concepts as the solution can be deployed in a few weeks.

The technology will be demonstrated at the National Retail Federation Big Show in January next year.
