Spar has opened a new supermarket in the Zagreb district of Knežija in Croatia with an investment of over €8m.

It has a retail sales area of 2,000m² that provides adequate space to offer a wide range of products to shoppers.

Around 60 new jobs were created in the area during the construction phase.

With the latest opening, Spar Croatia now has 109 stores across the country.

Shoppers will also have a choice of several Spar Own Brand products, including locally sourced fresh fruit and vegetables from the own brand range, SPAR Garden of Croatia (SPAR Vrtovi Hrvatske).

“The first Spar Hypermarket was opened in Croatia in mid-2005 after a license agreement was signed between ASPIAG and Spar International in 2004.”

Spar Croatia CEO Helmut Fenzl said: “HRK66m (€8m) was invested in the new SPAR in Knežija. When building the store, a particular focus was placed on trends and innovations in the areas of environmental protection and energy conservation. We are very proud of the store’s modern, energy-saving and environmentally friendly heating system.”

In May, Spar Croatia opened a new InterSpar Hypermarket in Rijeka with an investment of €23m.

The 4,000m² hypermarket provides an extensive range of more than 30,000 products to customers.

Designed by an international architect, the retailer spent eight months carrying out the entire construction process of the hypermarket.

The first Spar Hypermarket was opened in Croatia in mid-2005 after a license agreement was signed between Austrian Spar International AG (ASPIAG) and Spar International in 2004.

Spar Croatia is a member of the ASPIAG group.

The chain’s brand has primarily developed with Spar Supermarkets and Interspar Hypermarkets, both through the takeover of existing chains and opening of new stores.
