Chinese e-Commerce market records sales of $190bn in 2012

The e-Commerce market in China has recorded sales of $190bn in 2012, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The e-Commerce market in China has recorded sales of $190bn in 2012, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

Compared to sales in 2011, this is two-fold increase of 66.5%.

The data reveals that a total of 242 million shoppers purchased goods online in 2012. It also reports that e-Commerce transactions accounted for 6.1% of total retail sales of the country.

The growth is reportedly driven by sales through mobile devices with nearly 40.7% of online shoppers using a mobile device to buy e-Commerce merchandise.

Retailer’s mobile apps have boosted their sales with upto 53.6% online shoppers opting apps over main website.

Smart phones are said to be replacing traditional desktops with 53.3% of online shoppers making purchases using the smart devices.

Meanwhile, social media has played a significant role in driving the sales; 41.8% asserted that they have chosen a product through promotional adverts on social media website.

In terms of spending, average shopper purchased products worth $843, a 25% increase over the value spent in 2011.

Clothing and shoes have topped the most purchased category. Nearly 81.8% of e-Commerce shoppers bought merchandise from these two categories in last six months of 2012, CNNIC revealed.

Other categories that witnessed considerable sales surge includes general merchandise accounting for 31.6% of sales and consumer electronics with 29.6% of the total.

Sales from computers and other digital electronics followed closely contributing 29.6% in the total sales.

Among e-Commerce retailers of the country, Alibaba reported highest sales of $170bn through its two online portals, Taobao and Tmall.
