UK-based retail major Sainsbury’s has outlined plans to expand its convenience store line ‘Local’ with the addition of 50 new outlets by early 2014.

The chain is keen on launching these stores across London and South East region that currently houses nearly 150 convenience stores.

Commenting on the expansion plans, Sainsbury’s convenience director Simon Twigger stated that the launch of the new stores comes on the back of strong performance of its local stores.

"Sainsbury’s has an unrivalled history in London and the South East with our first store opening in Drury Lane in 1869 and these new stores carry on this tradition," added Twigger.

"The new ‘Locals’ will be located on high streets and in the heart of communities, providing access to healthy, quality food at fair prices."

The retailer has witnessed a year-on-year growth of 18% from its convenience stores, with an average footfall rate of over five million customers a week at its ‘Local’ stores.

The proposed stores will be supported by a new distribution centre at Thameside, which is specifically developed for the convenience store business.

The new stores are said to create nearly 1,000 jobs for the locals and an additional 350 jobs will be created after the Thameside facility becomes fully operational, the company added.

"These are jobs that set you up for a great career with Sainsbury’s with fantastic opportunities for progression and training. The new stores will also benefit the wider economy," Twigger added.

The expansion follows Sainsbury’s announcement earlier in 2012-2013, stating its plan to unveil 1-2 convenience stores every week; it has added nearly 87 convenience stores since then.

The convenience business of the retailer is expected to create 10,000 jobs over the three years.

Sainsbury’s currently operates a convenience store portfolio of 523 outlets across the UK.
