British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that the UK retailers witnessed a 0.7% drop in footfall for the month of May 2013 compared to the same month in 2012.
Month-on-month also retail footfall was down as against 1% rise in April 2013.
The drop in overall footfall was driven by 3.1% decline in Northern Ireland and 2.9% drop in West Midlands.
In addition, high street and shopping centers have also registered weak performance of 1% and 1.7% respectively, which is below the UK average.
Out-of-town locations, however, have recorded a footfall growth of 1.2% during the month, when compared to May 2012 extending strong April performance.
BRC said that only Greater London and the East had exhibited positive footfall growth, year-on-year.
BRC director general Helen Dickinson noted that although the year-on-year numbers have dropped marginally, the monthly conversion rates were good with consumers responding to good deals.
"Where there was a little growth, retail parks led the way and this could explain why furniture – most commonly sited out of town – was the month’s best performing category according to our Retail Sales Monitor," added Dickinson.
"Now that we’re into June, retailers will be hoping that summer sales and sunshine will make for a stronger showing next time."
