Retail sales volume dropped by 0.6% in euro area and by 0.6% in EU28 in September 2013 compared to the previous month.
When compared with September 2012, the retail sales index rose by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU28.
Month-on-month, sales of food, drinks and tobacco decreased 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.5% in EU27, while sales in non food sector decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and rose by 0.3% in EU28.
Among the member states for which data is available, total retail sales fell in 13, rose in seven, and remained stable in France and Latvia.
The decreases were observed in Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain where sales were decreased by 6.2%, 4%, 1.7%, and 2.5% respectively.
Highest increases in retail sales were in Luxembourg (+3.1%) and Poland (1.6%).
Year-on-year, sales of food, drinks and tobacco dropped by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU28.
Total retail sales rose in fifteen and fell in seven, in September 2013, compared to the same period last year.
The largest increases were recorded in Luxembourg, Poland and Bulgaria, where sales rose by 19.9%, 6.5% and 6.2%, respectively.
Slovenia, Belgium and Portugal recorded the highest decreases by 6%, 2.8% and 2.2%, respectively.
