UK food producers and grocery chains have agreed to introduce traffic light-format labels on food products in line with Department of Health’s new initiative.

Henceforth manufacturers will display levels of fat, saturated fat, salt, sugar and calories included in food products.

The new labelling initiative is said to be a part of government’s efforts to address growing health related issues such as obesity and poor diet.

The traffic light concept comprises three colors indicating the level of health value with green representing good, amber indicating medium and red indicating low.

Mars UK, Nestle UK, PepsiCo UK and Premier Foods, along with major retail chains such as Tesco, Wal-Mart’s Asda, J Sainsbury and Wm Morrison, have extended their support to the standard food labelling scheme.

Public Health Minister Anna Soubry remarked that the consumers like this type of labelling, which makes them aware of the contents.

"The UK already has the largest number of products using a front-of-pack label in Europe," added Soubry.

"By having all major retailers and manufacturers signed up to the consistent label, we will all be able to see at a glance what is in our food – this is why I want to see more manufacturers signing up and using the label."

British Retail Consortium stated that the initiative is launched by four UK governments to adopt a consistent and uniform system exhibiting the contents of the products.

BRC Food and Sustainability director said: "UK retailers have led the way on developing clear and consistent front of pack labelling over the last few years and we are delighted to see that such an important project is today getting the green light."
