The UK retail sales value increased 5.7% in March 2012, compared to the same month a year ago, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Retail sales volumes, which rose 3.3% year-on-year in March, were driven by other stores, non-store retailing and predominantly automotive fuel.

Internet sales values, on non-seasonally adjusted basis, increased 15.2% in March 2012, compared with March 2011.

In March 2012, the proportion of retail sales made via Internet is estimated to have been 8.5% of all retail sales excluding fuel.

Food stores sales volumes were down 0.6% in March from a year ago, while food stores sales value increased 3.7%, compared with March 2011.

Non-food stores sales volumes in March 2012 increased 4.6% from the same month last year, while sales value advanced 5%.

The growth in non-food stores sales volumes and values were due to increase in each of the component sectors.

In March 2012, non-specialised stores sector recorded a 4.8% rise in sales volumes and 3.8% increase in sales value.

Year-on-year in March, textile, clothing and footwear stores sales volumes grew 3.7% after declining 0.4% last month, while sales values increased 6.9% after a 1.8% rise in February.

Household goods stores sales volumes advanced 2.5% in March after a 0.1% decrease in the previous month, while sales value rose 2% after a 1.3% fall year-on-year in February.

Other stores sales volumes jumped 6.8% in March after a 1.3% decline in February, while sales value climbed 5.9% after a 1.8% decrease in February.

Non-store retailing sales volumes increased 13.4% and sales values climbed 13.1% in March, compared to the same month a year earlier.

Automotive fuel stores sales volumes grew 7.2% in the year to March 2012 and sales values surge d 12% in the same period from a year ago.

In March 2012, the total non-seasonally adjusted value of spending in the retail sector was estimated to be £32.6bn, compared with £24.6bn in February 2012.

Month-on-month, sales volume grew 4.9% in March after a 0.8% fall previous month and sales value increased 4.2% after a 0.4% decrease in February.
