Walmart Canada is collaborating with Lufa Farms to introduce hyperlocal produce to its customers in Montreal.
The retailer’s Marché Central Supercentre will now offer fresh vegetables grown in Lufa Farms’ 127,000ft² hydroponic greenhouse, situated directly above the store.
The move represents the first instance of Lufa Farms’ produce being sold through a retailer and Walmart Canada’s inaugural venture into selling produce harvested from a rooftop greenhouse.
Lufa Farms founder and CEO Mohamed Hage stated: “Rooftops are one of the most underused spaces in cities – and yet they’re perfect for growing food.
“Walmart has a huge network of rooftops across the country, and by transforming just one of them into a greenhouse, we’re showing what’s possible: fresh, local vegetables grown sustainably and sold just downstairs, the same day they’re harvested.”
The freshly picked selection of tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers is harvested each morning on demand, ensuring daily deliveries in-store within an hour of being picked.

Walmart Canada operations vice-president Cyrille Ballereau stated: “We are invested in Quebec and are proud to employ more than 14,000 associates across this province. Last year alone, Walmart purchased more than $3.8bn worth of products from more than 460 Quebec suppliers, and we’re excited to add Lufa Farms to this list.
“It’s a proud moment to see us collaborating so closely with another local Quebec supplier to bring this innovative programme to market.”
Lufa Farms’ rooftop greenhouse utilises half the energy typically required by conventional ground-level greenhouses.
It also features sustainability credentials, recycling up to 90% of its water and employing energy-efficient LED lighting while optimising underused urban space.
In January 2025, Walmart Canada confirmed plans to invest C$6.5bn ($4.5bn) up to 2029 to accelerate its growth trajectory.
The firm intends to establish numerous new stores nationwide, beginning with five Supercentres in Ontario and Alberta which are set for completion by 2027.
