Discount retailer Lidl GB is introducing a new self-scanning feature within its Lidl Plus loyalty app to enhance the in-store shopping experience for customers.
From September 2025, the feature will undergo a “friends and family trial” at four stores, with a broader phased rollout planned for 2026.
The self-scanning capability will enable customers to scan products as they shop, keeping track of their spending and savings in real time.
Shoppers will be able to swiftly complete their purchases at self-checkout terminals through the Lidl Plus app.
The development is part of Lidl’s long-term investment in technology and innovation, aiming to offer customers a faster and more flexible shopping experience.
Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell stated: “This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution. Integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster and more flexible way to shop.

By GlobalData“We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences. Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self-scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”
The new feature builds on Lidl GB’s recent initiatives, including the successful pilot of the Click, Reserve & Collect service and the nationwide rollout of self-checkouts.
Lidl’s Click, Reserve & Collect service offers Lidl Plus customers the opportunity to reserve Middle of Lidl products via the Lidl Plus app prior to their in-store release.
The Lidl Plus app is currently available to more than 100 million users globally. In April 2025, Lidl GB revealed an investment strategy, earmarking £500m ($667m) for the development of its retail network.
