
UK supermarket chain Morrisons is set to deploy Caper Carts, the AI-powered smart trolleys from North American grocery technology company Instacart.
Caper Carts will be initially introduced at one Morrisons store in early 2026, with plans for a further rollout.

The move represents Instacart’s inaugural retail partnership in the UK, introducing Caper Carts to British shoppers for the first time.
Instacart chief connected stores officer David McIntosh stated: “As we continue to expand internationally, we’re thrilled to partner with Morrisons to bring Caper Carts to the UK for the first time.
“Shopping is no longer solely online or in-store – it’s a hybrid of both – and Caper Carts offer a seamless way to combine the convenience and personalisation of e-commerce with the inspiration and discovery that happens in physical stores.

The trolleys are equipped with interactive screens, AI-powered sensors and built-in scales.
These features enable customers to scan items and add products to their basket, including the ability to weigh fresh produce directly within the cart.
Caper Cart allows customers to keep a track of their expenditure. To finalise their purchase, customers scan the barcode shown on the trolley’s screen at the store’s self-checkout station, stated Instacart.
The trolleys will also be integrated with Morrisons’ More Card loyalty programme.
Morrisons productivity director Gordon Macpherson stated: “We’re constantly looking for ways to bring innovation to the weekly shop to enhance the experience for our customers, and the cutting-edge technology of Caper Carts brings the best of digital and physical retail together in-store.
“We’re excited about bringing the first fully integrated AI-powered trolleys in the UK to a first store soon, and look forward to testing customer response and building understanding of how the technology works within the Morrisons store estate.”
Caper Carts are currently deployed in 100 cities across 15 US states, in retailers such as Kroger, Schnucks, Coles and Wakefern.
The integrated smart trolleys are provide a seamless and personalised shopping experience to customers.
In July 2025, Instacart introduced Caper Carts at the Wegmans Dewitt store in Syracuse, New York.
