Latham & Watkins and Kirkland & Ellis were the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers in the retail sector by value and volume, respectively, during Q1-Q3 2023, according to GlobalData’s latest league table.

The leading data and analytics company ranked advisers by the value and volume of M&A deals on which they advised.

According to its financial deals database, Latham & Watkins was the leading adviser measured in terms of value by advising on $12.1bn worth of deals during the period.

In terms of volume, Kirkland & Ellis occupied the top spot after advising on a total of 16 deals.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Kirkland & Ellis was among the only two advisers with double-digit deal volume during Q1-Q3 2023. It was the top adviser by volume in Q1-Q3 2022 and managed to retain its leadership position by this metric in Q1-Q3 2023 as well.

“Meanwhile, Latham & Watkins registered a significant jump in the total value of deals advised by it during Q1-Q3 2023 compared to Q1-Q3 2022. In fact, it was among the only two advisers that managed to surpass $10bn in total deal value during Q1-Q3 2023.”

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz held the second position in terms of value by advising on $10.7bn worth of deals, followed by Baker McKenzie with $8.9bn, White & Case with $5.8bn and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton with $5.1bn.

Runners-up in terms of volume were CMS with 13 deals, Baker McKenzie with eight deals, White & Case and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett with six deals each.
