Aldi continues to hold the position as the most affordable supermarket for purchasing daily grocery necessities, as per research conducted by consumer advocacy group Which?.

The group’s analysis involved comparing prices of 79 commonly purchased items, including both branded and own-brand products like Hovis bread, milk, and cheese, across eight leading UK supermarkets.

Aldi’s average basket cost for these items came to £135.95 ($180.34) in April, which presented significant savings over its competitors.

It was £22.66 more affordable than Morrisons, undercut Sainsbury’s by £22.54, and was less expensive than Tesco by £16.64.

Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield said: “The Which? analysis once again reiterates our message that if shoppers want to save money on groceries, then Aldi is the only place to shop.  

“We’re proud to continue our winning streak with our 18th consecutive month as the number one retailer for value; offering shoppers consistently low prices, whilst still maintaining our quality.”

Which?’s research also indicated that Lidl held the position of the second least expensive supermarket in April with an average basket price of £136.64.

Asda followed as the next most cost-effective option but was over £14 more expensive than Aldi for the same selection of groceries.

Tesco ranked closely behind when purchases were made using a Clubcard.

A broader comparison involving a list of 200 items, which included a larger array of branded goods, highlighted more substantial savings through loyalty schemes.

Asda maintained its position as the cheapest option for the fourth consecutive month, even without requiring a loyalty card, surpassing Tesco with a Clubcard.

Tesco with a Clubcard applied loyalty prices to 87 items and came in as the second cheapest, followed by Sainsbury’s with Nectar points and Morrisons with More benefits.

Waitrose remained at the higher end of the pricing spectrum at £570.89 for the larger basket of goods, 13% more costly than Asda.

Last month, British co-operative Co-op adjusted its pricing on over 100 essential items to match those of Aldi.
