UK grocery retailer Asda is investing £11.8m ($15.67m) to refurbish stores in the county o Yorkshire and surrounding areas by the end of 2025.

The investment programme is part of Asda’s continuing strategy to modernise the space and improve the shopping experience for customers.

The investment will see £7.2m allocated to refurbish stores in Kingswood, Harrogate, York, Pudsey and Keighley.

The stores will undergo full shop floor refurbishments, featuring a more intuitive layout, new feature lighting and neon signage to create a contemporary shopping environment.

An additional £4.6m will be invested in two stores in Grimsby and Stockton, with plans to extend the refurbishment programme to more UK locations in 2026.

The refurbishment is scheduled to begin in most stores in September 2025 and will take around seven weeks per store. All stores will remain open during the work.

The announcement follows a £2m transformation of Asda’s Pilsworth store in Bury, which reopened in March.

Asda chief commercial officer for retail and non-food Liz Evans stated: “We’re proud to continue investing in the communities we serve – especially in Yorkshire, where our story began 60 years ago.

“Following the successful refurbishment of our Pilsworth store earlier this year, we’re pleased to share our plans to modernise these Yorkshire stores and further enhance the shopping experience.”

In June 2025, Asda revealed plans for a £10m refurbishment programme across its more than 180 in-store cafés to enhance customer experience.

The retailer also recently improved its family leave policies, providing its 140,000 employees with increased support during significant life events.
