US discount retail chain Big Lots is continuing its revival under Variety Wholesalers’ ownership with plans to reopen 132 more stores next month.

This comeback is a key component of Big Lots’ overarching plan to rejuvenate its brand and presence.

A total of 14 states are earmarked for this expansion, with North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania poised to see the most significant number of store reactivations.

The reopening schedule is divided into two phases, with doors set to open on 1 and 15 of May.

The move follows a favourable reception from consumers to the initial batch of store reopenings that took place in April 2025 and marks a significant step in Big Lots’ reestablishment in the US market.

Big Lots sought Chapter 11 protection in September last year but was able to secure its continuity and safeguard numerous jobs through a sales agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners.

Under its new leadership, the retailer had already set in motion the relaunch of nine locations across six states this month.

Variety Wholesalers president and CEO Lisa Seigies said: “We’re excited to bring an additional 132 Big Lots! locations back to life in May. The customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The Big Lots! stores opening in May show our continued commitment to providing the best value to our customers with apparel for the family, everyday needs for the home, kitchen, and pantry plus a huge selection of famous brands. I couldn’t be prouder of the dedicated team who made it possible for us to serve these communities again!”
