Food retailer Carrefour has collaborated with retail digitalisation solutions provider VusionGroup to test EdgeSense store technology platform to enhance shopping experience.

Carrefour is the first grocer in Europe to adopt EdgeSense. It will enhance digitalisation on the shop floor, improving in-store experience for customers.

EdgeSense combines AI, a smart rails system, Captana computer vision technology and digital shelf labels to deliver merchandising compliance, real-time shelf monitoring and stockout detection, automated price and label compliance, and precise product geolocation.

The technology is currently being trialled at the Carrefour hypermarket in Villabé, France, where the installation includes 70,000 electronic shelf labels, 500 cameras and 7,000 EdgeSense rails.

Carrefour e-commerce, data and digital transformation executive director Emmanuel Grenier stated: “Digitalisation is at the heart of Carrefour’s strategy. Our stores, which account for 90% of our revenue, are a top priority, and this partnership with VusionGroup marks a key milestone in their modernisation thanks to the EdgeSense platform, which combines operational excellence with an enhanced customer experience. Data accuracy, computer vision and AI are essential levers to sustainably improve our in-store performance.”

The technological advancements will improve daily store operations by providing staff with intelligent tools informed by data and AI.

EdgeSense technology transforms stores into interactive media platforms that engage with shoppers in real-time.

The connected stores will offer a smoother shopping experience, time savings when searching for products, and personalised in-store services and recommendations.

Carrefour has already implemented shelf camera technology from VusionGroup in 35 stores.

VusionGroup CEO and chairman Thierry Gadou stated: “Carrefour is the first major food retailer in Europe to adopt EdgeSense technology, following Walmart’s decision to roll it out across its stores in the United States. The goal is threefold: to significantly improve store performance, customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction.”

In 2024, Walmart in the US expanded its contract with VusionGroup to accelerate the deployment of advanced technologies across its stores.
