Shoprite Holdings-owned and South African-based supermarket chain Checkers has launched its new on-demand 60-minute mobile app grocery delivery service.

The new service has been developed in response to convenience demands from its customers.

Named Sixty60, the app is said to be the country’s first service of its kind from a supermarket chain.

The mobile app is currently being piloted in select Checkers locations in Cape Town and Sandton. The locations include Durbanville, Willowbridge, Okavango Crossing, Rondebosch, Kloof Street, Sea Point in Western Cape, and Melrose and Bryanston in Gauteng province.

Shoprite Checkers innovation and strategy chief Neil Schreuder said: “Sixty60 will offer unrivalled convenience because it does all the hard work for you. In our time-pressed society, providing consumers with a swift, on-demand grocery delivery service is like giving them back time: today’s most precious commodity.

As part of the pilot programme, customers can download the app and start placing orders and receive free deliveries. The products on the app are priced at the same rate as those found in Checkers stores.

The app also features real-time tracking of order status and delivery.

Prior to the public pilot, Checkers put Sixty60 through several months of testing with its own employees.

Schreuder added: “The name Sixty60 captures the service’s main ambition: for customers to order groceries in sixty seconds and have them delivered in as little as sixty minutes.”

In September, Checkers Hyper opened its new flagship store in Sandton City, Johannesburg.

The new supermarket features a temperature-controlled wine cellar, chocolatier bar, coffee station, instore Kauai, sushi bar, and a coal-fired pizza oven.
