US food delivery service provider DoorDash has teamed up with AI company OpenAI to offer grocery shopping services inside ChatGPT.

Through the integration, ChatGPT users can search for recipes, have the required ingredients converted into a shopping list, and then order from nearby supermarkets and grocers via DoorDash’s on-demand delivery network.

The app in the AI chatbot offers access to grocery chains such as Kroger and Safeway, alongside regional operators including Bi-Rite, Schnucks, Fairway Markets and Wegmans.

To access the feature, customers must switch on DoorDash in the ‘Apps’ section of their ChatGPT settings and sign in with their DoorDash account.

After activation in a chat, they can request meal ideas, instruct ChatGPT to source the ingredients through DoorDash, inspect the auto-generated basket and finalise their order by opening the cart in the DoorDash app.

DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang said: “AI is unlocking an entirely new search and discovery experience for consumers that is dynamic and personalised.

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to create a seamless experience that allows users to quickly order ingredients for any recipe and check out directly on DoorDash. As we expand this experience to more shopping categories, our focus is on building AI tools that give people time back and make local shopping easier.”

The service is currently limited to a subset of users, with broader availability planned in the coming weeks.

DoorDash said the move is designed to enable local grocers to connect with customers at the moment they are planning meals and browsing recipes.

The company also intends to extend the ChatGPT link-up beyond groceries to other local retail categories available on its platform.

The launch sits within DoorDash’s wider push to build its local commerce services into conversational AI tools, aiming to link consumers with nearby retailers and delivery options through chat-based interactions.

ChatGPT VP and head Nick Turley added: “The DoorDash app in ChatGPT is another step toward bringing our vision to life – where AI connects directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their everyday lives.”

Earlier this month, Instacart launched a fully integrated shopping and checkout app inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The new app enables users to select groceries and complete an embedded instant checkout, without leaving the chat interface.
