French retailer Galeries Lafayette will open its first flagship store in India in early November in Mumbai, in partnership with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL), part of the Aditya Birla Group. 

The launch follows an agreement announced in 2022 between Galeries Lafayette and ABFRL to establish flagship stores in Mumbai and Delhi, along with a dedicated online platform.

The 90,000ft² Mumbai store spans five floors and has been designed by London-based firm Virgile + Partners, blending Parisian design with Mumbai’s architectural heritage. 

Commenting on the launch, Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla stated: “Luxury in India today stands at the threshold of transformation. With one of the fastest growing affluent populations in the world and a new generation of globally exposed consumers, the appetite for high-end experiences has never been stronger. 

“Our partnership with Galeries Lafayette marks a coming-of-age moment for Indian luxury retail. Together, we are creating an iconic destination in the heart of Mumbai — a world class showcase where the best of global luxury engages with the rising confidence of the Indian consumer.” 

The store will feature more than 250 international luxury and designer brands across fashion, beauty and accessories.

ABFRL stated that the store represents a structured, scaleable model for India’s luxury retail market and will help generate insights for long-term growth in the premium segment. 

India’s luxury market, valued at $85bn by 2030, continues to expand, driven by rising affluence, digital influence and aspirational consumption. 

ABFRL operates 1,168 stores across 7.1 million square feet of retail space in India. Its portfolio includes Pantaloons, Style Up and The Collective, along with exclusive partnerships with Ralph Lauren, Hackett London, Ted Baker and Fred Perry.  

Founded 130 years ago, Galeries Lafayette operates 65 stores in France and abroad, offering products across fashion, accessories, home and food categories. 

In September 2025, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) launched its new affordable fashion brand, OWND!, targeted at Gen Z consumers. 

The brand is designed to offer up-to-date and cost-effective fashion options for young adults, entering a competitive space alongside Trent’s budget apparel chain, Zudio.
