Loblaw, a Canadian food and pharmacy retailer, has achieved an 11% reduction in carbon emissions relative to its 2020 baseline.  

This significant achievement was highlighted in the company’s 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report.  

The report detailed Loblaw’s investment of nearly $44m in 490 carbon reduction initiatives over the past year. 

During the year, the retailer diverted over 78,000mt of food waste from landfills.  

This was accomplished through food rescue initiatives and increased donations, including nearly 47m pounds of food given to food charities via the Feed More Families programme.  

In its pursuit of sustainability, Loblaw has successfully converted almost two-thirds of its control brand plastic packaging to be recyclable or reusable in 2023.

The move is in line with the retailer’s target to reach 100% by 2025. 

In addition to environmental strides, Loblaw has made significant progress in its diversity and inclusion efforts.  

The retailer reported an increase in the representation of women in executive roles to 46% and in management roles to 39%, with a goal to reach 40% by the end of 2024.  

Visible minorities in management roles now stand at 32%, and in executive positions at 28%, which is above the company’s 2024 targets of 30% and 25%, respectively. 

Loblaw also prioritised training, with over 166,000 colleagues receiving instruction on fundamental Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) topics.  

Furthermore, over three million training courses were completed through various formats, including virtual and in-person classes, as well as self-paced learning.
