The retailer said the experience is scheduled to debut in the US within Gemini, followed by a phased international expansion.

Under the arrangement, the service will be developed by Walmart and accessed directly through Gemini using the Universal Commerce Protocol.

The initiative is intended to present Walmart and Sam’s Club products both online and in-store when they align with user requests, including seasonal needs or category-specific searches.

Walmart incoming president and CEO John Furner said: “Partnering with Google to bring the Walmart experience directly into Gemini is another step toward creating seamless shopping experiences for customers and members that are more intuitive and personal than ever before.”

During conversational interactions, Gemini will be able to draw from Walmart’s inventory, enabling users to narrow down options through successive queries.

Once accounts are connected, Walmart will be able to suggest related items based on a customer’s prior online and in-store purchasing history.

The system will also allow products identified through Gemini to be added to existing Walmart or Sam’s Club shopping carts while applying relevant Walmart+ and Sam’s Club membership benefits within the retailers’ established digital platforms.

The experience will include fulfilment options, giving customers access to delivery from stores and club locations at selected sites.

According to the press statement, this will cover delivery in under three hours for a large range of locally selected items, with some orders available in as little as 30 minutes.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said: “AI can improve every step of the consumer journey, from discovery to delivery. Walmart is an innovator in retail, and we are excited to partner with them on a new open standard to make agentic commerce a reality. Customers will soon be able to experience everything they love about Walmart directly in the Gemini app.”

Last November, Walmart launched its first store under the Walmart name in South Africa, located at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg.

The move introduced the US retailer’s primary banner to the South African market for the first time.

Next month, Walmart-controlled e-commerce company Flipkart secured approval from India’s National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to relocate its holding company from Singapore to India.
