Walmart has linked with OpenAI to introduce AI-powered shopping features, allowing customers and Sam’s Club members to make purchases directly through ChatGPT using its Instant Checkout option. 

The collaboration aims to merge Walmart’s broad product selection, low prices and delivery network with OpenAI’s technology to simplify how users shop online.

Customers will be able to plan meals, restock essentials or discover new products through conversational interactions in ChatGPT, with Walmart managing fulfilment. 

Walmart stated: “At the centre of this transformation are the everyday moments that define how people shop. This is agentic commerce in action: where AI shifts from reactive to proactive, from static to dynamic.”

The retailer already employs AI across its operations, enhancing product catalogues, reducing fashion production timelines by up to 18 weeks and reducing customer service resolution times by up to 40%.  

Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon stated: “For many years now, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change.

in early October 2025, Walmart announced the incorporation of ambient IoT (Internet of Things) sensors across its US supply chain under a collaboration with technology company Wiliot to track pallet deliveries.   

The initiative involved monitoring the location and condition of grocery pallets shipped each year to Walmart stores.  

The sensors, based on Wiliot’s ambient IoT technology, will transmit real-time data to Walmart’s AI systems.
