British supermarket chain Asda has opened a new Express convenience store in Castleford, West Yorkshire, marking the latest stage in its nationwide Express store rollout.

Located on Holywell Lane, the new store occupies a site that was previously a pub.

The store stocks more than 3,000 branded and own-label products, including fresh, ambient and chilled groceries, beers, wines and spirits.

Customers will have access to services such as a Costa Coffee machine, an ATM and Amazon collection and returns facilities.

The store will also offer on-demand delivery through Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo.

Joseph Sutton, vice-president of Asda Express, foodservice and fuel, stated: “We’re delighted to have opened the doors today in Castleford, marking the start of our Express store rollout as we bring Asda’s unbeatable value to new communities across the UK.

“From top-up essentials to convenient food on the go options, we’re excited to welcome new customers and offer outstanding value.”

The Castleford site is the first of up to 20 new Express stores that the retailer plans to open across the UK before the end of 2025.

Each new location will feature electronic shelf edge labels (ESLs) to streamline store operations.

The expansion forms part of Asda's strategy to grow its presence in high-footfall urban areas, residential neighbourhoods and transport hubs.

Since entering the convenience market in 2022, Asda has rapidly expanded its Express network.

The retailer expects to have 500 Asda Express stores in operation by the end of 2025, with further openings planned for 2026.
