French retailer Carrefour has officially ceased its operations in Kuwait, marking the completion of its strategic withdrawal from four Middle Eastern markets over a period of ten months.

In a message posted on its official Instagram account, the retailer said: “Dear customers, as of September 16, 2025, Carrefour will cease operations in Kuwait. On behalf of Carrefour management and employees, we extend our sincere gratitude for your continuous support over the past decades.”

This decision follows the recent shutdown of Carrefour outlets in Bahrain, as well as the cessation of operations in Oman in January and Jordan in November of the previous year.

However, it has introduced its new grocery brand, HyperMax, in the locations where Carrefour has ceased operations.

Majid Al Futtaim, the Dubai-based company that operates Carrefour in the region, has yet to comment on the closures.

Majid Al Futtaim launched the first Carrefour hypermarket in the region at City Centre Deira, Dubai, in 1995.

By 2020, the conglomerate oversaw more than 320 Carrefour stores across 16 nations.

Currently, Majid Al Futtaim Retail holds exclusive rights to operate Carrefour in 12 markets across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The company boasts a network of more than 390 stores.

Additionally, it is expanding its HyperMax brand, with plans for six new stores in Bahrain, adding to 44 existing locations in Jordan and Oman.

Carrefour Group opened its first 50 stores in Israel in May 2023 under a franchise partnership formed with Israeli group Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan in March 2022.
