US-based supermarket operator Schnuck Markets’ holding company, the 1939 Group, has completed the acquisition of Wisconsin-based grocery chains Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers.

The deal unites the brands under one family of companies, increasing the total store network to 164 locations.

This acquisition also expands the group’s team headcount with 8,000 additional employees.

Together, Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers run 51 stores across the state of Wisconsin. Festival Foods operates 42 outlets and Hometown Grocers manages nine.

Schnuck Markets runs 113 stores across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The deal, announced in September 2025, includes the purchase of shares held by Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers CEO Mark Skogen, along with those owned by employees through an employee stock ownership plan.

The brands will continue to operate as independent entities, maintaining their current headquarters.

Todd Schnuck, chairman and CEO of Schnuck Markets and the 1939 Group, will assume the role of chairman and CEO at Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers, succeeding Skogen.

Festival Foods, Hometown Grocers and Schnucks will retain their existing banners.

Todd Schnuck said: “As we celebrate today’s milestone, we also recognise that our teams are entering the busiest season of the year.

“Our top priority remains clear – keeping Festival Foods, Hometown Grocers and Schnucks teammates focused on serving and delighting our guests.”
