UK’s fashion and homeware value retailer Matalan is implementing the VisualStore commerce platform, developed by Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, for faster, smoother and connected shopping across multiple channels.
The collaboration is set to improve Matalan’s in-store experience.
VisualStore empowers Matalan’s IT and retail teams to swiftly introduce new point-of-sale features. Its self-enablement capabilities, such as an screen designer and advanced promotion tools, allow for in-house updates and reduce the need for external support.
This facilitates more efficient handling of transactions, including loyalty redemptions and online order pickups, while granting store staff more autonomy in service delivery.
The upgrade will also include 1,800 in-store devices to Toshiba’s latest hardware, ensuring a more responsive and modern shopping environment.
Pilot deployment of the VisualStore platform is scheduled for late summer 2025, with a complete rollout in all Matalan stores anticipated by spring 2026.

By GlobalDataToshiba Global Commerce Solutions software UK and Ireland head Martin Ward stated: “We introduced our software proposition to the UK market last year to empower retailers with tools to better serve their customers.
“Throughout the process with Matalan, we demonstrated how our software is fully featured and more flexible, enabling retailers to manage and update capabilities independently, with no ongoing costs. We believe self-enablement is the future of retail technology, and we’re thrilled to lead this shift. Securing our first deal in such a short timeframe is testament to the strength of our solution.”
Since the partnership’s inception in 2017, Toshiba has provided Matalan with point-of-sale hardware solutions. The progression to Toshiba’s VisualStore commerce platform offers streamlined shopping, making it quicker, smoother, and more integrated.
Matalan IT and transformation director Chris Salkeld stated: “We’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Toshiba, [which] shares our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that improve the experience for both our customers and our colleagues. We’re always trying to find new ways to serve our customers better and look forward to rolling out the VisualStore platform across our stores.”
