American consumer electronics retailer Best Buy is cutting jobs across the business, including roles within its Geek Squad support teams, as reported by Bloomberg.

Workers in customer care and in-home field teams are among those affected, but the number of employees impacted is reportedly small.

Impacted employees who are eligible will receive severance packages.

Geek Squad technicians, who provide in-store and at-home technology support and repair services, were among the staff let go. Best Buy employs more than 80,000 people, according to its latest annual report. 

The retailer has previously reduced Geek Squad headcount as part of broader restructuring.  

2024’s cuts were described by chief executive Corie Barry as enabling the company to reallocate resources to areas such as AI..

In August 2025, Best Buy disclosed $114m in restructuring charges in its second quarter. 

Recently, Best Buy launched its digital marketplace, powered by Mirakl, which offered an expanded range of online products. 

This launched more than doubles the number of products available on BestBuy.com and the Best Buy app. 

The marketplace introduced hundreds of new brands and added categories such as seasonal décor, automotive tech, office and home, and movies and music. 

Best Buy also introduced licensed sports merchandise from Fanatics. 

In 2024, the retailer collaborated with Google Cloud and Accenture for generative AI to personalise and streamline the customer experience. 

The collaboration was also aimed at empowering Best Buy employees to better serve clientele. 

Launched in late summer 2024, US customers were given access to a self-service option powered by a gen AI virtual assistant.
