German discount supermarket chain Aldi plans to open more than 180 new stores across the US by the end of 2026.

The expansion coincides with the retailer’s 50th year of operations in the country and forms part of a five-year growth strategy aimed at increasing its national footprint.

During this year, Aldi aims to launch new outlets across 31 states, taking its total number of US stores to nearly 2,800 by year-end.

This would move the company closer to its longer-term goal of operating 3,200 locations nationwide by the end of 2028.

A key element of the plan is Aldi’s entry into Colorado. More than 50 stores are scheduled to open in the Denver and Colorado Springs markets within the first two years.

The retailer has also planned to open a store in Portland, making Maine Aldi’s 40th US state.

Aldi US CEO Atty McGrath said: “One in three US households shopped at Aldi this past year, and in 2026, we’re focused on making it even easier for customers to shop our aisles first. That means bringing Aldi to even more neighbourhoods, upgrading our website and planning additional distribution centres to keep our shelves stocked with the products our shoppers love.”

Westward growth will continue with ten new stores planned for the Phoenix market in 2026, and a total of 40 locations targeted in the area by the end of 2030.

The company intends to double its store count by 2030 in Las Vegas, where it opened four stores last year.

In the south-eastern US, Aldi will proceed with the conversion of sites acquired through its 2024 purchase of Southeastern Grocers.

Close to 80 conversions are planned for 2026, with more than 200 expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

To support the expanded store network, Aldi plans to open three new distribution centres over the next three years, located in Baldwin, Florida (projected 2027), Goodyear, Arizona (projected 2028), and Aurora, Colorado (projected 2029).

The retailer is also expanding its distribution centre in Haines City, Florida, to add chilled facilities for perishable products.

The company reiterated its commitment to invest $9bn in the US through 2028, covering store expansion, supply chain development and digital upgrades.

As part of this programme, Aldi will launch a redesigned US website and delivery partnerships with Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats will continue.
