Consumer electronics retailer MediaMarktSaturn has piloted a new payment by smartphone service through its Saturn Smartpay system in Hamburg, Germany.

Customers can pick up, scan and immediately pay for various items available across the store. The company will continue the service until the end of February next year.

Customers can use the Saturn Smartpay service by scanning the barcode or the electronic shelf label of an item using the app, and then making payment using a credit card or PayPal.

After payment, store associates will deactivate the security tags at the Smartpay express counter before leaving the store.

The app is currently available for Android and iOS devices.

The company is planning to introduce Google Pay as a payment option from mid-December.
