US-based supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets has revealed plans to open its second New York City (NYC) location in Manhattan in the second half of 2023.

The Manhattan store will be located at 770 Broadway, a site previously occupied by Astor Place Kmart.

Wegmans Food Markets president and CEO Colleen Wegman said: “We are so excited to bring Wegmans to Manhattan. This is something we have been dreaming about and working toward for a long time.

“The community’s response to the opening of our Brooklyn store had an excitement and energy that you can only experience in NYC.

“You can feel that energy returning to the city and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Wegmans reached an agreement with Transformco to purchase Kmart’s lease at Astor Place. This agreement was brokered by RIPCO Real Estate.

The company then entered a 30-year lease agreement with real estate investment firm Vornado Realty Trust.

It will occupy both the street and lower levels of the site, totalling around 82,000ft² of floor space.

Vornado chairman and CEO Steven Roth said: “We are delighted to be part of bringing the beloved Wegmans to Manhattan.

“Wegmans is one-of-a-kind and will be a best-in-class addition to Manhattan, both for the local neighbourhoods and as a destination for residents from across the island.

“We look forward to partnering with Wegmans’ talented team on the opening of this signature location.”

Wegmans operates a network of 106 supermarkets across New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina.

In October 2019, the retailer opened its first NYC store in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Later that year, the company announced plans to invest $175m to develop a full-service regional distribution operation in Hanover County, Virginia.
