Undoubtedly the major factor that has had an effect on investment levels in the retail industry during this research period has been the covid pandemic. General store modernisations have taken a hit, but are moving ahead with the focus here being AI-powered automation.
In certain areas the pandemic has even spurred on investment. This has been the case with the many different contactless solutions, such as pick-up lockers, contactless payment solutions or cashier-less stores.
One area that has definitely taken a hit because of covid is supply chain operations, the industry has however responded with investment into different procurement solutions.
