What is Investments?

The Investments category looks at any significant financial investments into a company or its assets, specifically those investments that facilitate expansion of a company’s operations. This can be an investment by the company itself into its operations or by an outside investor be that another company, financial institution, private equity or venture capital firm.

Undoubtedly the major factor that has had an effect on investment levels in the retail industry during this research period has been the covid pandemic. General store modernisations have taken a hit, but are moving ahead with the focus here being AI-powered automation.

In certain areas the pandemic has even spurred on investment. This has been the case with the many different contactless solutions, such as pick-up lockers, contactless payment solutions or cashier-less stores.

One area that has definitely taken a hit because of covid is supply chain operations, the industry has however responded with investment into different procurement solutions.

Finally, some retailers have also been investing in customer experience and personalisation solutions.

This category consists of private institutions that have financed various expansion efforts made by retailers and the retailers in question as well. The expansion efforts could include new product lines, new brand launches or market entries.

This category highlights retailers that have invested in comprehensive modernisation programmes.

This category consists of retail chains that have engaged in various types of investment, mainly as part of a strategic partnership.

This category comprises retailers that have invested in various technological solutions in their operations. This includes mainly different types of checkout technology, AI and covid related technologies.
