A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US12007375B2) discloses a device designed to detect the freshness of perishable items. The device includes at least one binary sensor for detecting an analyte of interest in the item, an integrated circuit for converting sensor data into a signal, and an antenna portion for transmitting the signal. Notably, all components are printed on a single sheet, making the device unitary. The antenna portion collects energy from an aerial device to activate the integrated circuit, which then broadcasts a unique identifier for the item, conducts pulse tests through the sensor to detect voltage drop data, and transmits this data to an external receiver.

Furthermore, the patent claims specify that the aerial device used for energy collection can be NFC, RFID, Zigbee, 802.15.4, Thread, or Bluetooth. Additionally, the device can feature multiple sensors, each tuned to detect different concentrations of the analyte of interest or different analytes altogether. In cases where multiple sensors are present, the concentration of the analyte increases across successive sensors. This innovative device offers a comprehensive solution for monitoring the freshness of perishable items through advanced sensor technology and efficient data transmission capabilities.
