Grocery retailer Aldi will add 800 new stores across the US by the end of 2028 as part of its five-year expansion plan.  

The retailer aims to achieve the target through a combination of new openings and store conversions. 

The expansion strategy is set to provide communities with access to high-quality products at the lowest prices.  

Up to 2028, Aldi will invest more than $9bn in its US national expansion.

It aims to bolster its presence in the northeast and midwest with 330 new stores across these regions by the end of 2028. 

The retailer also plans to expand in the west, targeting Southern California, Phoenix Arizona and Las Vegas Nevada.

ALDI CEO Jason Hart said: “Our growth is fuelled by our customers, and they are asking for more ALDI stores in their neighbourhoods nationwide.

With this commitment to add 800 stores in the next five years, we’ll be where our shoppers need us while positively impacting the communities we serve.”  

The retailer’s expansion plan in the southeast of the US will be supported by the acquisition of Southeastern Grocers and its Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets chains. 

The conversion process is scheduled to start in mid-summer 2024, with 50 stores beginning the transition in the latter half of the year and most reopening as ALDI in 2025. 

ALDI plans to maintain several Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets under their current banners.  

The retailer’s growth will focus on sustainability, with new and remodelled stores featuring energy-efficient LED lighting, eco-friendly refrigeration and rooftop solar energy systems.
