E-commerce retailer Amazon has offered its employees work from home option until the end of June 2021.

The decision comes a few weeks after Amazon revealed more than 19,000 of its US frontline workers were infected with Covid-19 this year, reported Reuters.

In July, the retailer reportedly allowed its employees to work from home option until 8 January next year.

Speaking of the development, in an emailed statement, an Amazon spokeswoman said: “We continue to prioritise the health of our employees and follow local government guidance.

“Employees who work in a role that can effectively be done from home are welcome to do so until 30 June 2021.”

In the recent months, employee unions alleged that the company put the health of its employees at risk with the opening its warehouses open even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Amazon spokeswoman added: “We have invested significant funds and resources to keep those who choose to come to the office safe through physical distancing, deep cleaning, temperature checks, and by providing face coverings and hand sanitiser.”

Recently, the company offered a special one-time Thank You bonus valued over $500m to all front-line employees and partners working with the company throughout the month of June.

Earlier this month, four US senators demanded a response from Amazon over reports of employee tracking and monitoring.

In a separate development, social media platform Facebook allowed its employees to work from home until July next year, and Google extended the work from home option for those employees not needed in the office until June 2021.
