Swedish furniture retailer Ikea is planning to strengthen its distribution network in the US by opening a new facility in Staten Island, New York.

The new leased facility will serve as a customer fulfilment centre and complement its existing network of seven regional distribution centres, which support 47 stores in the US.

The 975,000ft² leased facility is part of Matrix Global Logistics Park located in Staten Island, which will be operational later this year.

“The new fulfilment centre in Staten Island will help us meet the home furnishing needs of our customers in the New York metropolitan area.”

Ikea US president Lars Petersson said: “As we expand across the country and grow our online presence, we want to ensure we have sufficient warehouse capacity to support the efficient and timely delivery and shipment of products to our customers.

“Our goal is to increase accessibility to IKEA products, and a new fulfilment centre in Staten Island will help us meet the home furnishing needs of our customers in the New York metropolitan area.”

The new fulfilment centre will be engaged in delivering items that have been purchased by online customers and larger items at an Ikea store.

To be operated by CEVA Logistics, Ikea’s new site is expected to create nearly 200 employment opportunities in the region.

CEVA Logistics is currently working with Ikea at its UK customer distribution centres.
