Ikea has unveiled a 330,540ft2 Vancouver customer distribution centre at 7031 York Road, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

This is the third distribution centre for the company in Canada and the first in Western Canada. It currently operates two facilities in Montreal and Toronto.

The facility will offer increased capacity to the furniture retailer for future growth and will allow it to better serve customers across Western Canada.

It will also be used to fulfil orders from the retailer’s Richmond, Coquitlam, Calgary, and Edmonton stores, collection points in Nanaimo, Victoria, and Kelowna, home deliveries across British Columbia and Alberta, along with more than half of home deliveries in the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

“Today’s opening is an important step as IKEA Canada continues its transformation journey to become the leading multichannel home furnishings retailer.”

IKEA Canada president Marsha Smith said: “Today’s opening is an important step as IKEA Canada continues its transformation journey to become the leading multichannel home furnishings retailer.

“By optimising our distribution networks, we ensure IKEA is fit for long-term growth, delivering a more enjoyable and convenient shopping experience for our customers in Western Canada, both today and in the future.”

The new facility also created approximately 100 jobs for various functions such as logistics, human resources, safety and security, as well as operations.

The company also claims that the distribution centre enabled it to reduce transport distances and emissions. It also committed to use 25% electric or zero-emission vehicles by 2020, and increase it to 100% by 2025.
