Facebook-owned Instagram is reportedly planning to introduce a new standalone shopping app called IG Shopping.

IG Shopping allows users to shop for products from merchants they follow and directly purchase them within the app, reported The Verge.

Sources familiar with the matter were cited by the publication as saying that Instagram’s shopping app is currently in the development stage. Details about the launch date are not known.

Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said that one billion people are active on the platform, while more than 25 million businesses currently have accounts and two million are advertisers.

“We just launched a shopping experience that was just expanded in Q2 to all consumers in an additional 45 countries.”

Speaking during the Q2 2018 earnings call, Sandberg said: “We just launched a shopping experience that was just expanded in Q2 to all consumers in an additional 45 countries.

“DefShop is an e-commerce fashion brand in Germany. They were an early tester for IG Shopping and what they did in that test is tag each article of clothing.
