US-based retail company Kroger is planning to introduce its Scan, Bag, Go shopping technology in 18 operating divisions.

Developed by Kroger’s in-house research and development (R&D) team, the new technology allows customers to scan and bag products using a wireless handheld scanner for a quicker checkout experience.

Users can alternatively scan items using an app on their smartphone devices. Kroger is further developing the technology to allow customers to make payments directly through the Scan, Bag, Go app, allowing shoppers to exit the store even quicker.

“We are bringing this transformative technology to new stores across the country through Restock Kroger.”

Kroger executive vice-president and chief information officer Chris Hjelm said: “With every new product, service and technology integration, Kroger is redefining the customer experience and reimagining the store of the future.

“After testing Scan, Bag, Go in several locations, we are bringing this transformative technology to new stores across the country through Restock Kroger.

“Many of our customers have adopted this convenient new technology and responded favourably to the seamless checkout experience. Scan, Bag, Go is one more choice, like ClickList, that Kroger provides so customers can choose when and how they want to shop with us.”

By end of this year, the Scan, Bag, Go service will be available at select locations, including Atlanta, Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Michigan and Nashville.
