Sports apparel and accessories brand Nike has won a patent infringement case against multinational athletic apparel retailer Lululemon.

A New York federal court jury ruled in favour of Nike, awarding the company $355,450 on the grounds that Lululemon’s athletic footwear infringed on Nike’s patented sneaker technology, as reported by Reuters.

The lawsuit, initiated by Nike in January 2023, accused Lululemon Athletica of violating its patents through the sale of at least four different shoe models.

The official verdict, released on 10 March 2025, confirmed the jury’s support for Nike’s claim that Lululemon’s Chargefeel, Strongfeel and Blissfeel lines of running and training shoes encroached upon a Nike patent detailing advancements in athletic shoe design.

However, the jury dismissed allegations concerning a second Nike patent.

Nike initially sought damages equivalent to a minimum of 5% of the revenue generated by the infringing products.

A Lululemon spokesperson downplayed the significance of the awarded damages and expressed satisfaction with the jury’s decision regarding the non-infringement of the second patent.

Lululemon plans to challenge the infringement finding on appeal. The brand has given assurances that it will not impact their product offerings.

Nike previously launched a separate legal action against Lululemon in New York in 2022, alleging that the brand’s Mirror Home Gym product infringes on Nike patents related to interactive exercise technology.

Proceedings for this case are still underway. In May 2024, Nike secured a partial victory in its dispute over stripes in its designs with rival company adidas in Germany.
