Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has debuted its first foray into the US market with a shopping site called 11 Main.

The portal 11Main.com will initially be open to customers by invitation only.

The site is being launched by Auctiva and Vendio, two of Alibaba’s subsidiary companies acquired a few years ago, with financial and operational support from the parent group.

The site, currently in beta, features a wide range of products in a variety of categories including fashion & style, home & outdoor, jewelry & watches, baby & kids, collecting & art, and crafts, hobbies & toys.

Headquartered in San Mateo, 11 Main already has signed approximately 1,000 merchants.

Mike Effle, president and general manager of 11 Main, said: "We’re constantly introducing new shop owners who represent the diversity of Main Street and featuring their new, amazing products in a beautifully designed experience."
