The 3D printing device would allow objects to be scanned and printed in a miniature form.

Costing from £40 per print, Asda claims to offer the first affordable service in the UK.

Scanner cameras will capture every angle of the subject during a two-minute scanning session, post which, the shape will be recreated in 3D form by spraying ceramic fluid in thin layers to build up a solid object, reports The Press.

Asda has been toying with the 3D printing service with its American parent company Walmart for almost 18 months now.

The idea behind the launch of the service is the general fascination with the 3D printing idea. Asda believes that the service would prove popular among general public, with the most popular 3D items to be miniature figurines, adding a new dimension to shoppers’ mantelpieces.

Expected to take the “family photograph” to the next level, these printed models could also be used as personalised wedding cake toppers, or a tribute to a favourite pet.

Asda’s York store will print and paint the figurines, which can be picked up by the customers later.

Mark Ibbotson, retail director at Asda, told The Press,” We are thrilled to be the first supermarket and best value retailer to offer this new shopping experience in the UK.

“Our customers are always looking for the next big innovation and 3D printing is a guaranteed talking point amongst friends and family this season.”

Set to roll out across the country, the 3D printing service follows Asda’s recent launch of the UK’s first ever 3D Rapid Scan3.
